This place is amazing. Located just south of Cooktown, camping here is permitted by the Cook Shire Council with permission from the traditional owners the Yuku-Baja-Mulku people. It has easily been the stand-out camp so far.
I have read that the ‘camp anywhere for free’ situation is only temporary until a something more formal can be arranged. As much as I dislike signs and rules and directions, unfortunately the disrespect for nature is so ingrained into Australian culture that the only way to protect it is by rule of law. Until 4WD Aussies get to a sign that tells them “don’t do something or else”, they will rip and tear like there’s no tomorrow. Along with greed and waste, environmental destruction is one of our birth rights, we are the lucky country.
